Velopresso

This alone, can be one of the best reasons to love design students. Finnish designer Lasse Oiva and London designer Amos Field Reid have created a mobile espresso bar. That in itself is pretty cool, but how many food carts and mobile culinary gems do we already have in this world? Well, I bet not all of them are self sustainable. These foresighted London Royal College of Art product design students have embraced 'pedal power' to combine their love of coffee, cycling and sustainability. The Velopresso needs no electricity and no tethers, but it does need an industrial producer, even after winning the Deutsche Bank Award 2012 (Design) and placing runners up at the 2012 Pininfarina Design Contest.

So how does it work? Five seconds of pedaling this coffee trike will produce the energy to grind enough for a double shot, all while the camp stove heats the water and steam that powers the espresso machine. If that's not enough, these guys are also working on a way to recycle their used coffee grounds into their own source of fuel. Let's just hope these guys work on their barista skills as much as their pedalling. You wouldn't want to go to all that trouble and genius to make a horrible coffee. Regardless, I applaud these designers and hope to cross paths with the Velopresso one day. Found here.
