Amy Sol

I saw Amy Sol speak at Semi Permanent in Sydney in 2008. Some of her older works were painted on pieces of wood. Instead of painting over the wood, she kept the grain and texture of the wood as a feature in her paintings. It gives it a really natural feel along with her muted colour palette. Though the style of her work is greatly influenced by a combination of manga, folk-art, vintage illustration and modern design, she remains a self taught artist. Check out the rest of her amazing work on her website. Found here.
