Demolishing a Building - Japanese Style

Japan has a reputation for crazy inventions and ground breaking technology. Well they have succeeded yet again with the solutions and technology behind demolishing high rise towers, floor by floor. Starting from the top, Taisei Corporation is using giant jacks and electricity generating cranes to gradually lower these buildings. When other demolition options use explosives and can be quite dangerous and messy for a whole variety of reasons, this method is quiet, not affected by weather and relatively sustainable.

As sections of each floor are removed, they are transported to the ground using an internal crane. This process and motion then generates electricity that is then used to power and run the other equipment used in the demolition. This operation also allows for materials and structural elements to be re-used and combined with the green energy, carbon emissions are said to be reduced by 85 percent. Although this whole process might not be as fun as blowing stuff up, it certainly marks a turn in the way we can creatively and sustainably change our city skylines. Found here.
