Drinkable Rainwater

Taking cue from the rainwater flowing smoothly on the leaves, Argentine design studio Synopsis has come up with an innovative umbrella that collects and filters the rainwater for drinking purpose. The “Umbrella Recollector,” as they hail it, features a cone shaped fabric to collect rainwater, which you can pour into the water bottles after appropriate purification through built-in filter. Moreover, you can adjust the knob to screw bigger bottles and store drinking water for future use. Found here.

Bending Bike

Design student kevin scott designed this unusual bending bike that not only folds up tightly but can be
used to locks itself up. The de montfort university industrial design student designed the bike to make it safer and easier to lock up your bike in the city. His design looks like a normal bike when in riding mode, but a simple level on the frame triggers the frame to go from rigid to pliable. A ratchet system built into the frame enables the bike to simple be bent around a pole fitting one side of the handle bar into a closure under the seat, locking the bike in place. The design just won runner-up for the business design centre new designer of the year award at new designers. Found here.

Rex the robot

Rex Exoskeleton promises to change the lives of physically debilitated drastically. Fabricated by a New Zealand based technology company, Rex stands up as a viable contender against traditional wheel chair owing to its usability against the traditional armchair. Rex is a set of bionic legs which most importantly allows its users to self transfer themselves in and out without any external help. What makes it suitable for paraplegics is the fact that the exoskeleton can support full weight of the person making it easier to stand, walk, move sideways, go up and down steps and walk on flat hard surfaces including ramps and slopes. Rex would go on sale in New Zealand this year followed by an international launch in 2011. Check it out. Amazing!

Traffic Straddling Bus

Congested roads due to increasing number of personal vehicles are a common problem that is troubling all the developed and developing nations worldwide. Addressing the issue, Chinese group Shenzhen Hashi Future Parking Equipment Co. Ltd has come up with an ambitious project to run green and economic subway cars, rather buses, that seat or commute passengers 4 to 4.5 meters above the ground and let smaller vehicles drive underneath without any hindrance. The Straddling Bus, as they call it, runs on electricity and solar energy and can carry up to 1400 passengers, which definitely will help in reducing the number of vehicles on city roads. Moreover, it is cheaper to construct and maintain in comparison to a traditional subway. Beijing’s Mentougou district is set to launch its first track (186km) by the end of this year. Found here.
